Portsmouth City Council is currently scaling back to only the business-critical operations in light of the latest guidelines around the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. As such, all our museum sites will be closed until further notice. Apologies for any inconvenience.


Please note: Due to operational reasons, some exhibits, galleries and areas of our museums may have to close early on certain times and dates. This may also be at short notice. We will endeavour to keep this page up to date with any closures, but if there is something specific you wish to see or do at our museums, please call ahead on 023 9283 4779 before making the journey. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but will only close when it is absolutely necessary and we have no alternative. Many thanks for your understanding.

Visitor Information Centres

There are Visitor Information Centres at The D-Day Story, Portsmouth Museum and The Hard Interchange. Our friendly team will help you plan your visit, with information and lots of suggestions on accommodation, attractions, entertainment and events. As well as discounted tickets for attractions, we also sell tickets for local events and entertainment including no fee bookings for the Kings Theatre in Southsea. We are also agents for Lucketts coach trips and holidays. Coach and theatre bookings must be made in person. For more information, click here to go to the Visit Portsmouth website.

Please note, the Visitor Information Centre at The Hard Interchange closes for lunch and may run reduced hours on Friday due to operational reasons. Apologies for the inconvenience.

The D-Day Story

Last admission one hour before closing time.

Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The D-Day Story will close at 4pm on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Portsmouth Museum

Open Tuesday-Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays. Portsmouth Museum is closed on Mondays.

The cafe is now open, serving cakes, sandwiches and hot drinks. Please call 023 9283 4779 for more information.

Due to electrical testing, some of the second floor galleries (Decorative Arts, Game Over and Football in the City) may intermittently be closed to the public until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience and will aim to minimise the level of disruption and the length of time any galleries will be closed.

Last entry to Portsmouth Museum 30 minutes before closing time. Due to operational reasons, some galleries may be closed. To find out what will be open ahead of your visit, please call 023 9283 4779.

Please note that the Searchroom is now in the Portsmouth History Centre on the second floor of Portsmouth Central Library. Please see the Portsmouth History Centre website for more information.

Charles Dickens Birthplace

393 Old Commercial Road

Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum is open April - September, 10am-5.30pm, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The museum will also open for a special service on 7 February to commemorate Dickens' birthday.

Last entry to Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum 30 minutes before closing time.

Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Southsea Castle

April - September, Tuesday - Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays, 10am - 5pm.
Closed on Mondays (except for Bank Holidays).

Southsea Castle is now in its winter season, so the keep is closed. The Courtyard remains open to visitors as usual.

The Courtyard Cafe (located inside the Castle) is open throughout the year: click here for more information. There is no access to the rest of the Castle outside the Castle's normal opening times.

Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Natural History Museum at Cumberland House

Cumberland House
Eastern Parade

Open 10am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays. Closed on Mondays.

The Natural History Museum will close at 4pm on New Year's Eve. The museum will be closed on 24, 25 and 26 December, and 1 January.

Please note: The Butterfly House will close at dusk during the winter period.

Last entry to Cumberland House Natural History Museum 30 minutes before closing time.

Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Eastney Engine Houses

Please note, due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, Eastney Gas Engine House will not host monthly Open Day events for the foreseeable future, whilst its volunteer team take relevant precautions. Apologies for any inconvenience.

The Beam Engine House will be open 11am-5pm on the following Sundays:
March 29
April 26
May 31
June 28
July 26

As the Covid-19 situation continues we cannot guarantee museum opening.

We politely request that visitors are 'covered up' with a suitable top and bottoms when using our museums.
